Mission Statement

MISSION

Grounded in the belief that language shapes people’s lives and informs cultures, the faculty in the Department of English at Angelo State University is dedicated to fostering an appreciation of literature, arts, and culture for all students, faculty, and the larger communities of the University and of West Texas. To create “optimal personal development and useful, responsible citizenship” for ASU students, the Department of English crafts its curriculum to advance critical thinking and verbal expression at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty members demonstrate concern for and promote involvement with students to advance the Department of English as a community of learners. To enhance this learning environment, the faculty is committed to serving the department, University, profession, and community through excellence in teaching and active engagement in professional activities.

GOALS

1. Meet the undergraduate educational needs of English majors and minors and the general student population by maintaining a high-quality curriculum.

2. Promote success for English majors and minors through ongoing advising and mentoring programs.

3. Promote excellence in the teaching profession through courses that provide theory and practice in the teaching of English Language Arts and Reading.

4. Meet the post-baccalaureate educational needs of English majors by maintaining a rigorous Master of Arts program.

5. Incorporate multi-media and/or technology where appropriate in classes at all levels.

6. Promote faculty success through collegial interaction that encourages excellence in teaching, scholarly and creative activity, and service to the Department, the University, the profession, and the community.

7. Encourage general understanding and appreciation of the literary arts by providing programs available to all students, faculty, and community members.

8. Contribute to departmental growth by maintaining active retention and recruitment procedures.

9. Maintain departmental excellence by providing periodic review and assessment of the program and its faculty.
