Poetry Jams Caused a Pre-Conference Stir!
Drs. Gates, Kornasky, Serrano, Mitchell-Smith, and several ASU NCTE Students Affiliate members organized poetry jams at Central Freshman Campus and Central High School just prior to the 13 th Writers Conference featuring Terrance Hayes. The students and faculty generated an interest among high school students and teachers that led to several groups attending events at our Conference.

Conference Presentations:

2009 Texas Council of Teachers of English Conference in Fort Worth was a Blast!
Dr. Gates an 6 ASU NCTE Student Afffiliate members were a success at the 2009 Texas Council of Teachers of English Conference in Fort, Worth, TX, earlier this semester. Dr. Gates and Hillary Sommerhauser, Erin Marks, & J.J. Farmer presented a panel entitled “Entering the Conversation: Creating Space for Student-Driven Engagement with Literature through the use of Literature Circles.” Three more members, Claudia Becerra, Rebecca Rogers, and Paige Westerman did a reading with famed YA author Paul Fleischman (author of Weslandia & Whirligig ) at the Conference luncheon. We all went to a lively keynote address given by Tim O'Brien, and the members then went to other informative sessions and we all went out to see the play “The Bluest Eye” (based on Morrison's novel) on Saturday night. We were the only University or school to bring as many students as we did—and all our students DID something! We made quite a splash!
