Internship in History

The purpose of the internship is to provide advanced history students with a practical learning experience outside of the classroom. The internship is a reciprocal relationship in which the student works as a volunteer either at the West Texas Collection or Ft. Concho Museum and Historical Landmark in return for pre-professional training in such areas as preservation and restoration of historic artifacts, archive management, museum operations, and education. Duties assigned the intern will reflect, as closely as possible, those of the professional staff at the West Texas Collection and Ft. Concho.

Application should be made by letter to the head of the Department of History. It should contain as a minimum the applicant's current GPA, cumulative semester credit hours, history semester credit hours, and a statement of the applicant's serious intent to fulfill the internship in the upcoming long semester. An intern will be selected by the history faculty in the long semester preceding the internship. The intern must be a history major who has filed a degree plan and will normally be a senior during the internship, although others will be considered. Students will receive 3 SCH of advanced history credit. These hours must be applied as elective credit beyond the 30 SCH required of history majors.

The intern will work a minimum of 100 hours during the semester under a professional supervisor, either the head, West Texas Collection, or the assistant director, Fort Concho Museum and Historic Landmark. The student will be required to complete and submit a semi-weekly, one page, internship report in duplicate to the relevant professional supervisor and the department head. In addition, at the end of the semester, the Intern will write and submit a report of approximately 3000 words evaluating the semester's work. The professional supervisor will evaluate the Intern and provide the department head with this evaluation. The department head will determine the grade based on the semi-weekly reports, the student paper, and an evaluation submitted by the professional supervisor.
