Member of History Department faculty since 1999. Areas of specialization: Modern Asia; World History; Ancient and Modern China; Asian-American Relations; and International Relations.
Courses taught include U.S. history surveys; History 3370 (East Asia to 1800); History 3371 (East Asia Since 1800); History 4340 (World History Since 1945); History 4362 (Topics in Asian History); and History 6340 (topics in World History).
University Service: Active participant in several Faculty Search Committees, among them ones for the Dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts (2003-04); member of the Library Committee (2001-2004); member of the College Curriculum Committee (2003-) and the Core Curriculum Committee (2002-).
Scholarship: Numerous book reviews for Choice and other academic journals; several entries in Encyclopedia of Tariffs and Trade in U. S. History and in The World Trade Encyclopedia. Forthcoming journal articles include "Industry in Pre-Modern China," in Cynthia Northrup, ed., The First, Second and Third Industrial Revolutions (New York: E.P. Sharpe; and, "Guo Songtao and His Image of France," in Jin Lu ed., Images of France in China During the Qing Dynasty (Canada: Laval University Press). Acts as academic journal referee, textbook referee for university and commercial publishers, and is Advanced Placement Test reader in U.S. History for the Educational Testing Service. Member of the Walter R. Craddock Award Committee (appointed by the Southwestern Social Sciences Association) to judge yearly the Best European/Asian History Paper. Annually presents scholarly papers at various history symposia.
Works in Progress: Two book manuscripts titled: "Zhou Enlai and the Korean War 1950-1953," and "Conflict, Contact, and Co-existence: Chinese American Relations, 1948-1960"; and several articles.
Awards: The Walter R. Craddock Award for the Best Paper in European/Asian History, the 2002 Conference of the Southwestern Social Science Association; ASU Research Enhancement Grants (2001) to support archival research in mainland China.
