New Scholarship and Enhancement Funds
In October 2008, ASU alumni Alvin and Patricia New gifted the Honors Program $250,000 over five years to fund scholarships and program enhancements. Each year, $20,000 goes toward a variety of scholarships for Honors students and $30,000 is used for activities that improve and/or augment the Honors Program.
The Alvin and Patricia New Honors Program Scholarship Fund
This fund helps pay for a variety of scholarships and is flexible, which allows the Honors Program director to help determine scholarship recipients and amounts. Some of the items the fund could be used for include:
- Internships in Washington, D.C., through the Washington Center
- Scholarships for Honors Program emissaries and mentors
- Academic Endurance Scholarships (for students who maintain a 3.8 GPA or better after two years in the program)
- Supplemental scholarships for upperclassman business and education majors
- Honors Program Director’s Award
The fund already has helped Honors students attend Washington Center programs that included seeing the inauguration of President Barack Obama and a 10-week internship with an international trade consulting company. It also has helped send students to other Washington, D.C., internships and to the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference.
The Alvin and Patricia New Honors Program Enhancement Fund
As with the scholarship fund, the Honors Program director has flexibility in determining uses for money from the enhancement fund. Possible enhancement activities include:
- Faculty course innovation grants
- Course and/or class cultural field trips
- A dinner group of Honors students interested in public service or international business careers
- An Honors Leadership Forum and Community Involvement Fair that helps students get involved in several community service projects
- Financial support for students taking prep courses (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc.)
- Community service activities
- National Collegiate Honors Council programs
The fund has already paid for a class field trip to the King Tut Exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art and for a group of Honors students to attend Texas Tech University’s 24th annual All University Conference on the Advancement of Women in Higher Education.
