Germany - European Studies 2009

The 2009 European Studies Program is a component of the student and faculty exchange program between Angelo State University and the University of Lüneburg that was established in March 1991. Highly successful exchanges have been conducted each year since the inception of this program.

The 2009 program will provide students with a unique opportunity to study Germany and its economic impact on the European Union. Students will scrutinize the economic and monetary unification well underway in Europe, including the introduction of the unified currency, called the euro. Students will have the opportunity to learn about European common policies such as monetary and fiscal policy, common trade policy and common agricultural policy and their economic and social impacts. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about the European Monetary System by first hand exposure to European financial institutions and individuals directly involved in international financial matters. The students will relate this information to the United States and Texas to gain insight to the global economy in which we live today.

Students will also study European music and art through a course in music appreciation and visits to the Alte Pinakothek museum in Munich and the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. In addition, students will visit several cathedrals, which have outstanding architecture and art works.

The program will be conducted during the second summer session of 2009 (July 6 - August 6) with the European portion from July 5 through August 4.

Students will register for two courses that will feature classes on the Angelo State University campus followed by four weeks of classes in Germany.

The sessions at Angelo State University will introduce students to the major themes of study and provide an extensive orientation for living and studying abroad. The students will be given reading assignments to familiarize them with Germany and the European Economic Union. Assignments in the fine arts course will focus on music appreciation of classical European music.

At the Leuphana Universität Lüneburg students will delve into the opportunities and problems facing Germany today. Field trips, seminars, and lectures by University of Lüneburg faculty, and cultural representatives will be an integral part of the studies in Germany. Excursions to Hamburg, Lübeck, and Berlin will be included to provide the students with the greatest educational opportunities and to enhance the students’ learning experience. The portion of the European experience before arriving in Lüneburg is planned to include visits to Frankfurt, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Füssen and Munich.
