Undergraduate Programs
Bachelor of Science
There are four options to choose from when pursuing a Bachelor of Science (BS) in kinesiology.
- Athletic Training - Accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) prepares you for a career as an athletic trainer. If you are interested in science and sports and have a genuine desire to help people, this may be the career path for you. Upon completion of the program, you may choose to test for national certification and state licensure.
- Exercise Science – The exercise science program prepares you for career choices in clinical and/or commercial exercise settings. Upon completion of the program, you are eligible to test for a variety of certifications offered by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Kinesiology students interested in physical or occupational therapy are encouraged to choose this degree option.
- Kinesiology – The kinesiology program is the most broad and flexible degree option available to students. The program can be designed to meet your specific career or graduate/professional school goals.
- Physical Education Teacher Education – In conjunction with the ASU Educator Preparation Program (EPP), this program trains you to be a physical education teacher. Once you complete the program, you may test for all-level (EC-12) Physical Education Certification. The EPP is a candidate for accreditation by the National Commission on the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Pre-Physical Therapy
If you are interested in pursuing a Master of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, you must first earn a bachelors degree and complete the selected program’s prerequisites. The exercise science option can provide you with the knowledge and background needed to pursue a career in physical therapy and is a common choice for interested PT students.

Minors
- Coaching Education – If you are interested in coaching as a career choice, a minor in coaching education is appropriate. Since coaches in the public school systems also teach classes, you must be certified in an academic area of your choice, like math, English, social studies or science. To successfully get the certification and knowledge needed, you need to major in the field of study you plan to teach and minor in coaching education.
- Kinesiology – Many ASU degree programs require students to choose a minor. If you are pursuing a career in any exercise-, sport- or recreation-related business or industry, you may want to consider kinesiology as your minor.
Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (B.I.S.)
The B.I.S. degree gives you the opportunity to apply course work in multiple fields towards an undergraduate degree. You are required to complete three 18-hour areas of concentration, one of which can be kinesiology. It is meant for students whose career goals call for training in more than one field or who want a broad knowledge in several fields rather than a depth of knowledge in a single discipline. If you are seeking a B.I.S. degree, you must declare it as your major in the same manner and at the same time as other students declare a major. For more information about the B.I.S. degree, refer to the current ASU Catalog or contact the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.
