CRLA Tutor Certification

The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) is a national organization made up of postsecondary student-oriented and learning assistance professionals. CRLA membership includes faculty in various fields (reading, writing, math, and education) Supplemental Instruction and tutor training administrators, learning assistance and study skills professionals, learning center administrators, and developmental education faculty. CRLA provides a platform for professional development and the promotion of research, as well as a forum for communicating best practices in specific educational fields. CRLA offers Special Interest Groups (SIGs), an annual conference, literary journal, insight on legislative action, and scholarships/awards.

CRLA also has an International Tutor Program Certification (ITPC). Since its inception in March 1989, more than 1,000 college and university tutorial programs in the United States and Canada have received tutor training certification through this certification process. It is important to note that CRLA certifies programs, not individuals. CRLA has certified the Office of Supplemental Instruction at Angelo State University. ASU is now qualified to issue CRLA tutor certification to individual SI Leaders/Tutors.

The purpose of the ITPC is twofold: First, it provides recognition and positive reinforcement of successful work from an international organization. Second, its certification process sets the standards regarding tutor roles and responsibilities, communications, ethics, study skills strategies, and training.

ITPC has been endorsed by the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE), Commission XVI of the American College Personnel Association, the American Council of Developmental Education Associations, Association for the Tutoring Profession (ATP), and the National Tutoring Association (NTA).

itpc Level One - Regular Tutor

SI Leaders/Tutors who receive Level One status have met the basics requirements for tutor certification which involve pre-term training on tutor roles and responsibilities, designing and implementing effective SI/tutor sessions, communication skills, questioning techniques, proper documentation, and study skills strategies, as well as the accumulation of required work experience.

itpc Level Two - Advanced Tutor

SI Leaders/Tutors who receive Level Two status have demonstrated advanced tutor skills through assistance with SI Leader/Tutor training and orientation and the completion of special projects involving leadership development, Bloom’s Taxonomy, classroom assessment techniques, and collaborative learning techniques, as well as work experience above and beyond that required for Level One.

itpc Level Three - Master Tutor

SI Leaders/Tutors who receive Level Three status have demonstrated mastery of tutor techniques through assistance with SI Leader/Tutor training and orientation, completion of independent study involving learning styles, building rapport, online academic support, and leadership development, completion of the of the Mentoring & Coaching Workshop which also includes mentoring a new SI Leader/Tutor, and documented work experience above and beyond that required for Level One and Level Two.
