Purpose of SI Leaders

SI leaders model effective classroom behavior and lead group study (SI sessions) that allows students to participate in group work and discussions regarding course content. SI leaders also offer advice and suggestions regarding time management and study skill strategies. The goal of SI is to help students become independent learners.

As an SI leader, you will receive valuable training in addition to teaching and tutoring experience that can help solidify your subject knowledge and understanding of key course concepts. If you are interested in graduate school or are studying to become a teacher, being an SI leader offers you an excellent introduction to these fields. As an SI leader, you can also expect to develop and improve the following skills:

Additionally, all SI leaders have the opportunity to work toward CRLA professional tutor certification (Level I/Regular Tutor, Level II/Advanced Tutor and Level III/Master Tutor). Each level offers an introspective look at the learning process, learning styles and learning assistance as a way to help SI leaders improve their SI sessions. Each level also includes a raise in pay.

Benefits of Becoming an si Leader/tutor

The Supplemental Instruction Office at ASU was awarded certification by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). By achieving this status, the SI Office is authorized to certify student tutors at these levels:

  • Level I/Regular Tutor
  • Level II/Advanced Tutor
  • Level III/Master Tutor
