Fall 2009 ASU Magazine
The newly released fall 2009 issue of Angelo State University Magazine outlines the national recognition gained by the university this summer, examines the future of our local newspaper and the possible effects on ASU, and tells the story of an ASU nursing faculty member who is thriving in the face of adversity.
The cover story takes an in-depth look at how ASU earned designations as one of the “Best 371 Colleges,” one of the “Great Colleges to Work For” and a “Military Friendly” campus from three national publications.
“Mourning Newspaper” examines how the Internet is affecting the production, circulation and dissemination of the San Angelo Standard-Times as well as how the newspaper’s management is handling the changing environment. It also explores the possible effects on ASU, which has a long history of students both interning and working at the Standard-Times.
“One Life to Live” examines how nursing clinical professor Pam Darby’s life has changed dramatically since her husband was diagnosed with ALS. Instead of being defeated, Darby was galvanized into action with activities that not only benefit her husband, but also her community and ASU.
As in each fall issue, the magazine also includes profiles of the ASU Alumni Association’s Homecoming honorees. They include former students and faculty, current faculty and friends of the university.
Additionally, the Briefs section details a host of university awards that range from grants to the Nursing Department and Dr. Connie Russell in biology to top chapter designations for chemistry and biology student groups, a pair of programmatic benchmarks for the College of Education and cash winnings for the Bass Club.
In the Angelo Staters section, a summary is available of the many honors bestowed upon ASU faculty, staff and students over the late spring and summer. Updates on ASU athletics are featured in the latter portion of the magazine.
