Food Safety and Product Development Laboratory
The Angelo State University Food Safety and Product Development Laboratory is a facility of approximately 8,000 square feet directly adjacent to the Management, Instruction and Research Center. As a function of the Department of Agriculture's mission, the facility has five main goals:
- Offer quality classroom, laboratory and research experiences to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled as animal science majors with interest in meat and food science.
- Pursue research opportunities in food safety, shelf life extension, meat quality and product development.
- Provide research results and educational opportunities to the public.
- Provide educational opportunities for public schools through judging contests and clinics.
- Provide recognition to Angelo State University through a nationally recognized teaching, research and judging program.
Facility
The FSPD Laboratory maintains several laboratories for research and teaching. The laboratory is able to fully process products from beginning to end with functional harvesting, processing, cooking/smoking and packaging capabilities. The laboratory maintains several general and specialized pieces of equipment capable of producing, cooking/smoking and packaging of meat/food products.
