Baroque Trumpet Artist to Perform at ASU

Nathaniel Mayfield, a world-renowned artist on the Baroque trumpet, will perform in San Angelo at Angelo State University and the First Christian Church on Monday, Nov. 2.

The soloist will present a master class on Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. in the Eldon Black Recital Hall inside the ASU Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive. At 7:30 p.m., Mayfield will be featured in a concert at First Christian Church, 29 N. Oakes St., with organist Beth Walker. Both events are open free to the public.

Mayfield’s Baroque trumpet is a predecessor of today’s trumpet and has no valves. Its sound was the model for the great trumpet works of J.S. Bach, Handel, Mozart and Beethoven.

The much-honored musician was educated at The Juilliard School, Columbia University, Interlochen Arts Academy, Tanglewood Institute and the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe, Germany. Among many awards Mayfield has won is the Presidential Scholar Medallion.

Mayfield currently serves as an instructor of trumpet at Texas A&M University in College Station.
