Where Will It Take You?
Scholarship: Academics and scholarship are the ideals upon which Greek Life is based. A student's academic responsibilities should be their highest priority. Angelo State University's fraternities and sororities provide support to the academic mission of the university by encouraging their members to attend study halls and to participate in other academic success programs. Most importantly, sorority and fraternity members encourage members to maintain high academics. The importance of balancing academics with extra-curricular activities is instilled in each member. Research has shown that students involved in co-curricular activities such as social fraternities gain additional experience from increased peer support and leadership opportunities, as well as increasing their chances of successfully completing their university studies.
Leadership and Involvement: Greek Life offers outstanding leadership opportunities and helps to develop the leadership skills needed to be competitive in the job market. Greek students obtain valuable experience through chapter management, day-to-day operations, self-governing and community involvement. Many leadership opportunities are also available to the members within the chapter and/or the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils. Greek student leaders gain skills in areas of responsibility, decision-making, communication, accountability and money management.
Angelo State University's sororities and fraternities also provide leadership opportunities at the regional and national level through their participation in conferences, leadership institutes and student advisory boards.
Involvement outside of the chapter is also encouraged. Over 50% of our Greek community belong to other student organizations or church groups or donate time to community service agencies.
Service: Community service is one of the basic fundamental principles of all Greek organizations. Each year sororities and fraternities donate thousands of hours of their time to philanthropic projects and community service endeavors. Each chapter has its own philanthropy which is supported on an on-going basis. In addition, chapters sponsor local philanthropic projects such as Friends 2000, Habitat for Humanity, Alzheimer's Walk and the Cancer Memorial Wall. This year, the Greek community united together during Greek Week and collected over 3,150 pounds of canned food for the Concho Valley Food Bank. These activities not only give Greek men and women the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of other people, but to better themselves.
Brotherhood/Sisterhood: One of the most exciting aspects of Greek Life is the social experience it offers. Formals, Greek Week, theme mixers, date parties, retreats and intramurals are only some of the examples of the wonderful social opportunities fraternity and sorority members share. These activities are not only fun for the men and women, but help bond fraternity brothers and sorority sisters together as a family and build unity among the entire Greek system.
As a member of a Greek organization, you will form friendships unlike those found in many other organizations. Greek membership is not about conformity. It's about finding a place where you can celebrate your individuality, while sharing commons bonds with your brothers or sisters. These bonds are not only among members of each individual chapter here at Angelo State University, but also among chapters around the nation. The common bonds of chapter history, ritual and ideals extend past the boundaries of Angelo State University.
