First-Year Guidelines
- Go to class – Attending class is the easiest way to achieve academic success.
- Read your syllabus – Become an expert on course requirements and due dates.
- Meet with your professors – Professors schedule office hours for the sole purpose of meeting with students. Take advantage of that time.
- Take advantage of the study resources on campus – Help is available through the Writing Center, Office of Supplemental Instruction and the Workshop Series sponsored by the Center for Academic Excellence. You can also form a study group.
- Get organized – College professors expect you to be prepared. You have to take responsibility for your learning.
- Get involved on campus – Consider joining a student organization, club, sorority or fraternity or participating in intramural sports.
- Stay on campus – Do not go home every weekend. The more time you spend getting to know the campus and meeting new friends, the less homesick you will feel. Take advantage of all the cultural and social events that happen on campus.
- Take care of your health – Take advantage of the Health Clinic. If you are sick or feeling isolated or depressed, the clinic offers many services that can help.
- Open your mind – You are going to meet people who see the world much differently than you. You are going to hear a lot of different ideas. Try to understand other people’s ideas, even if you do not agree with them.
- Enroll in USTD 1201– This class will help you transition to ASU, teach you a variety of learning strategies and introduce you to important university resources.
