Waiting List FAQ

What is a waiting list?

A waitlist is created by a department when all seats in a particular class have been filled. If a student drops the course, the department can use the waiting list to notify other interested students of the opening.

If I waiting list a class, am I guaranteed a seat?

No. Being on a waiting list does not guarantee you a spot in the class, nor does it guarantee that additional seats will be made available. It is just a way for you to wait in line for a possible opening.

How do I get on a waiting list?

If you try to add a course that is already full and has a waiting list available, our registration system will give you the option to join the waiting list. If you choose to join the waiting list, please check your ASU email frequently for possible notification of an open seat.

When are waiting lists available?

If a department decides to offer a waiting list, it will be active from the start of registration through the fourth (4th) class day of the semester.

How do I get notified if a seat becomes available?

The Registrar’s Office will notify the first eligible person on the waiting list via their ASU email account. The student is given 48 hours to respond and register online for the class, except during the late registration period, when a student is given 12 hours to respond and register.

What happens if I don’t act within 48 hours of the notification of an open seat?

If you are notified about an opening for the class and you do not respond within the given time frame, the offer will be rescinded and the next student on the list will be notified.

Can I see how many students are ahead of me on the wait list?

Yes. You will be able to see your place on the wait list. However, it is important to note that graduating students have top priority, so an upperclassman may be called before others to fill the open seat.

Will I automatically be enrolled in the class if space becomes available?

No. You will be notified of the opening, but it will be your responsibility to register for the course within the allotted time frame.
