Introduction to Remote Drive Access for Students

Remote Drive Access allows students, faculty, and staff the ability to access their documents and files stored on the P: drive from off campus, residence halls and the wireless network. If you are unsure of what the P: drive is, please see the following link.

The information on this page will guide you through P: drive remote access procedures. In order to better protect sensitive data, access to the P: drive has been restricted to on-campus or using ASU Remote Drive Access utilizing the ASU VPN service.

Student FTP Remote File Access Procedures

Step 1 – You must install and run the VPN client in order to access files on your ASU drive space.

What is the VPN Client Software?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and provides a secure connection through an insecure network (typically the Internet) to a secure network. In our case it provides a secure connection from a remote site to the ASU campus across the Internet. VPN is a solution that will give authorized remote users the same full access to campus resources that on-campus users currently enjoy.

Why is ASU using VPN Client Software?

ASU has a firewall that helps to protect the internal campus network. In some cases, remote persons need access to internal resources (such as the ASUDrive Remote File Access System) VPN provides a way for persons to connect security to the internal network and get to resources that are usually only available from on campus.

Step 2 – There are two supported options for accessing the ASUDrive Remote File Access System – either Internet Explorer or WSFTP. Method 1 can be used with Windows 2000/XP:

Method 1 (IE):

  1. VPN Connection must be established.
  2. Open Internet Explorer
  3. Click on Tools->Internet Options->Advanced
  4. Make sure this option is selected - “Use Passive FTP (for Firewall and DSL compatibility)”
  5. Type ftp://asudrive.angelo.local in the address bar
  6. Type in your Lab username and password in the dialogue box. Example – username = aaa100
  7. Copy files to a temporary space on your hard drive or removable media
  8. Paste the files from your temporary space back into your ASU space when you are done working with the data.

Method 2 (WS_FTP):

  1. VPN Connection must be established.
  2. Open WS_FTP LE if installed, if not installed, download and install from ftpplanet.com
  3. Create a new profile
  4. Profile name = ASUDrive
  5. Hostname/address = asudrive.angelo.local
  6. User ID = Your lab username. Example – username = aaa100
  7. Password = Your lab password
  8. Transfer files to a temporary space on your hard drive or removable media
  9. Transfer the files from your temporary space back into your ASU space when you are done working with the data.
