Residence Hall Internet Access

Overview of Service

Students living in the residence halls have access to the Internet and e-mail from their own computers in their rooms, without the need to pay for a third-party vendor. Initial service includes Internet access, e-mail and FTP service. We are currently researching the feasibility of offering access to server space (p:\drive) and/or programs available in the computer labs.

Residence Hall Internet Access

Availability

Network connections are available in all residence halls on campus. Please see the floor plans for locations in each residence hall.

Requirements

In order to take advantage of this service, you will need to provide your own computer with a 10/100 Ethernet network card and a patch cable. If your computer does not have a network card, ASU has an agreement with our preferred vendor, Computer BYTES, to assist with the purchase and installation of the correct card at a special price for ASU students. Currently, Computer BYTES is offering the patch cable free of charge.

To obtain your e-mail account, you must go by any of the computer labs on campus and ask the assistant on duty for an e-mail account.

Recommended System Requirements

PC owners should have a Pentium 233Mhz, or better, system, with at least 64MB of RAM and a 10/100 Ethernet Card. We recommend Windows XP for your operating system.

MAC owners should have a Power PC processor or better, a 10/100 Ethernet card, and be running Mac OS 8 or better.

Configuring Your System

When you arrive on campus, you will receive a more detailed booklet explaining how to configure your particular system for your IP address. You will need to follow the directions provided in the booklet before you can connect to the network.
