Advanced planning is essential!

  1. Know the location of fire extinguishers and fire alarms in your area ahead of time and how to use them. Fire alarms are usually located at or near the exit.
  2. Be familiar with at least TWO fire exits in your area in case one is blocked or unusable.
  3. Know the location of emergency call boxes in your area.

  4. If you have been trained on the use of a fire extinguisher and are comfortable in using one, remember PASS:
    • P- Pull the pin (remember…you must pull out the pin to discharge to fire extinguisher).
    • A- Aim the nozzle at the base of the flames.
    • S- Squeeze the trigger.
    • S- Sweep the nozzle back and forth across the base of the flames.

Upon discovery of a small fire (size of a basketball):

  1. First call University Police at 942-2071 or dial 9-911 from a campus phone.
  2. Find and pull the nearest fire alarm panel if available. If not, attempt to give verbal commands to have people evacuate the building and notify emergency services.
  3. At about 8-10 feet from the fire, promptly direct the charge of a fire extinguisher toward the base of the flames. Sweep the charge from side to side.

REMEMBER: Most fire extinguishers last only 30 seconds or less.

Upon discovery of a large fire:

  1. Immediately call University Police at 942-2071 or dial 9-911 from a campus phone.
  2. Activate the fire alarm and give verbal alarm to others. Fire alarms are generally located near the exits.
  3. Evacuate the building, alerting people as you go. Seek and assist persons in your area who are limited in their mobility or who may need some additional assistance in evacuating.
  4. Use only stairways. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS.
  5. Close all doors leading to main hallways. This may help control the spread of fire. NEVER prop open stairwell doors. Propping doors will only aid in the spreading of smoke and fire.
  6. Once outside, proceed to the Emergency Assembly Area. Remain at least 300 feet from the affected building.

  7. Keep all parking lots, walkways and roadways clear for responding emergency vehicles and personnel. Remain upwind from smoke and flames.
  8. NEVER RE-ENTER ANY BUILDING until the “all clear” is given by University Police or other properly identified emergency personnel.

REMEMBER: If you find your clothes have caught fire, drop to the floor and roll. Smother the fire with a blanket, rug or heavy coat. Immediately summon medical personnel.
